NCAA Z-Rating Bracketology Explained
Z-Rating Bracketology projects what the 64-team NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship would look like if the season ended today. The field is 31 automatic qualifiers (projected conference champions) and 33 at-large bids. The top 32 teams are seeded in four regions of 1 through 8, and the top 16 host first- and second-round pods on campus. The four 1-seeds open against the four lowest-rated teams in the field, and the 2 through 4 seeds draw the next 12, the way the committee bracketed 2023 through 2025. The other 16 unseeded teams face the 5 through 8 seeds as close to home as possible. Nobody meets a conference opponent in the first or second round.
How the NCAA's selection criteria are applied here:
- Automatic bids: the projected champion is the team with the best conference win percentage. Identical percentages go to the better Z-Rating.
- RPI and significant wins: at-large selection and seeding follow a bracketology rank that blends the Z-Rating with an RPI-style rating and rewards wins over top-10 teams, which is how the committee has picked and seeded recent fields.
- .500 rule: a team must be .500 or better overall to earn an at-large bid. Automatic qualifiers are exempt.
- Significant wins and losses: the record vs the Z-Rating Top 25 is shown next to every team.
- Head-to-head: when two teams on the same seed line have played each other, the team with the better head-to-head win percentage is seeded ahead of the other. A split series keeps the bracketology order.
- Common opponents: already built into the Z-Rating, which rates every result against opponent strength.
- Conference avoidance: no two teams from one conference share a first- and second-round pod.
AQ conferences: . Projected AQs go to the best regular-season conference record (Z-Rating breaks ties), unless a champion is set in the admin. The rebuilt Pac-12 is treated as at-large only until the NCAA confirms its automatic bid. Host sites are projected from the seeds; actual sites depend on submitted bids. Updated: —
